BARCELONA — A publisher has been charged with defending genocide for publishing neo-Nazi books.

Pedro Varela is the owner of Europa bookshops in Barcelona and also owns a publishing house which distributes books via the Internet.

All the books deny the Holocaust took place, say police.

Varela starting publishing books in October last year and has issued thousands of copies of some 20 books.

Police raided his bookshop and seized 5,000 copies this week.

Varela was jailed for five years in 1998 for similar charges of defending the Holocaust.

Neighbours in the Gracia area of Barcelona where his bookshop is situated have campaigned to get rid of Varela.

They even persuaded the local council to change the name of the road to Calle Anne Frank, after the child diarist who was killed in a concentration camp.
