MADRID — Erika Ortiz, sister of Princess Letizia, died on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Spanish Royal Family said.
The 31-year-old was found dead in the Madrid house which she shared with her sister Letizia before she married.
No reason for her death was given but it was known she had been suffering from depression for some time.
The Spanish King Juan Carlos, who was visiting Germany, was said to be "deeply sorry" at the news.
Queen Sofia was told of the death while on a visit in Indonesia.
She was said to have broken down.
The Ortiz Rocasolano family asked for "respect and prudence" while they tried to deal with their loss.
Erika Ortiz, who worked as a producer for a television company, broke up with her husband last year.
The couple had a six-year-old daughter Carla.
Ortiz was said to have gone to work as normal last week but then asked for a couple of days off this week.
