Mubarak associate arrested in Madrid: security
A close business associate of ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who has been charged with killing protesters and fraud, has been detained in Spain, a security official told AFP.
"Hussein Salem has been arrested in Madrid," the official said on condition of anonymity.
Mubarak and his two sons Alaa and Gamal, are to face trial on August 3 on charges of ordering the killing of protesters and fraud.
Salem, a close associate of the Mubaraks, is to face trial in the same case.
The businessman is accused of giving properties to Mubarak and his family in return for huge swathes of land in the lucrative tourism hub of Sinai.
He is also accused of squandering public money for his involvement in a deal to sell natural gas to Israel at low prices.
Mass nationwide protests that erupted in January and led to Mubarak's ouster saw power transfered to a military council.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has vowed to bring to justice all former regime members found guilty of abuse.
