MADRID - The number of jobseekers in Spain rose in August, ending six months of decreases, the Employment Ministry said Thursday.
A total 13,217 people were added to the list of those looking for work, an increase of 0.83 percent compared to July.
Since August 2003, the number of jobseekers has risen by 29,178, or by 1.86 percent, and now stands at 1,598,392, the ministry said.
The biggest increases were seen in the construction sector, up by 7.09 percent in August from July, and in industry, which showed a rise of 3.7 percent.
Among males, the monthly increase was 3.33 percent, while among women the
number decreased by 0.81 percent.
Since April, Spain's new government publishes the unemployment rate on a quarterly basis, in keeping with International Labour Organisation standards.
For the second quarter of 2004, unemployment reached 10.93 percent of the workforce according to the latest information from the economy ministry.
Across the full 25-member European Union, unemployment in July came to nine
percent of the workforce.
