ALMERIA - Another 240 Spanish soldiers were flying to Afghanistan Wednesday as the latest part of a contingent to help provide security for that country's electoral process.

Of the latest contingent, 150 belong to the tactical group expected to be stationed in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, while the others will serve in Kabul with support, protection and helicopter units.

In statements to the press before departing, Lt. Col. Francisco Javier Abajo Merino said the mission was to "help local organisations and Nato establish security so the elections can be held successfully".

The troops are to assume "the protection of roadways, zones and convoys" as well as carrying out any other mission they are assigned, he said.

The number of Spanish troops in Afghanistan is expected to reach 1,040, and the Spanish mission should be totally operative by the end of the month as Afghanistan approaches an October presidential election.
