MADRID - By 2012, a third of newly created households in Spain will have benefited from some kind of government aid, Housing Minister Beatriz Corredor announced Tuesday.

Presenting her ministry's plans for the legislature, Corredor stuck by the government's pledge to build 150,000 subsidised housing units per year over the next 10 years, around 40 percent of which will be destined for renters rather than first-time buyers.

Some of the new housing blocks would be managed under lease by the private sector, she said.

Among other forms of assistance for home-seekers, Corredor highlighted the recent introduction of rent subsidies for young people.
