MADRID- The Spanish winemakers' federation has chided foreign minister Angel Moratinos for admitting that he was a connoisseur of French wines but knew little about his own country's produce.

"For a Spanish ambassador to admit that he does not know Spanish wines would be regrettable, but for the foreign minister to admit that he has a better knowledge of French wines is a real setback for Spain's wine industry," the winemakers said in a  statement.

In response, the federation's head, Pau Roca, offered to throw open its wine cellars to give the minister a chance to sample some Spanish vintages.

"The minister must do something about his lack of knowledge of our great wines -- and we will welcome him to our cellars for as much wine-tasting as he needs," Roca said in an interview with the Spanish business daily Expansion.

Moratinos, a francophile with family ties to the wine-producing Bordeaux region, said in a weekend interview that the wines he knew best were those from the French southwest.
