Montserrat Caballe agrees to fine for tax evasion: reports
Spanish opera star Montserrat Caballe faces six months in prison and 250,000 euros in fines for cheating the taxman under a deal she has made with prosecutors, reports said Tuesday.
According to Spanish media, the 81-year-old soprano will not have to serve any time and has already settled the 500,000 euro ($600,000) tax bill that sparked the case.
The deal would spare the singer, who is said to be in frail health, from a trial. However, prosecutors could not be reached Tuesday to confirm the reports.
The celebrated diva was placed under judicial investigation in April, accused by state prosecutors of channelling earnings through a company in Andorra when she lived in Barcelona.
Caballe, born to a humble family in Barcelona, toured the world in a career spanning 50 years and made a splash in the popular music world when she recorded a song with Freddie Mercury for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
In October 2012, the singer suffered a minor stroke and broke her arm while in Russia and was flown to hospital in Barcelona.
