MADRID - The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Friday that it has postponed the sending of a first batch of Spanish troop reinforcements to Afghanistan.
The soldiers were due to leave by Monday at the latest. No new date was given or a reason for the delay.
The MoD also declined to say how many troops would be leaving to join the 137 soldiers already serving with Nato forces in Afghanistan.
The Spanish cabinet gave the go-ahead for the deployment of up to 1,040 troops in July, in the wake of criticism for withdrawing some 1,300 troops from Iraq.
A medical team of up to 400 is due to be among those sent to Afghanistan, and for the force to be backed by a support group of four helicopters and two Hercules transport planes.
Troops are expected to be in place before 9 October when general elections are due to be held in Afghanistan.
