A six-year-old German girl reported missing may have fallen off a 70-metre cliff.

Madrid –  The body of a six-year-old German girl was found Thursday at the foot of a cliff in northeast Spain, less than 24 hours after she was reported missing, emergency services said.

A helicopter spotted the body at the foot of the 70-metre (230-foot) cliff, about 3.5 kilometres (two miles) from the place where she was last seen on Wednesday evening in the Cap de Creus park, near the town of Cadues, a fire service spokesman said.

But he did not say if the child's death appeared to be an accident or if police were pursuing a criminal inquiry.

The discovery followed an all-night search by police and fire service officials, involving around 50 vehicles, as well as volunteers.

The spokesman was unable to say if the girl and her parents were tourists or were Spanish residents.
