GRAN CANARIA — Police arrested the mayor and three other officials of a town in Gran Canaria for alleged corruptionon Tuesday.
Francisco Gonzalez, of the Popular Party, was one of four people arrested in Mogan.
The others are the deputy mayor, Onalia Bueno Garcia and two council employees, police sources said.
They were arrested for alleged perversion of the course of justice, misuse of public funds, carrying out ‘prohibited activities and negotiations’ and the trafficking of influences.
A fifth person is expected to be arrested.
The police operation was launched after alleged corruption relating to the granting of building contracts in the town to developers.
The arrests come after claims were made by the socialist party in the town about the activities of the mayor.
It is the latest is a series of police operations against council officials for alleged corruption across Spain.
The government has promised to crack down on civic corruption.
In March last year, the Marbella city council was dissolved after a multi-billion euro corruption scandal.
