TORREVIEJA — A man was gunned down in what appears to be the latest gangland shooting involving a rising number of Eastern European mafiosos in Spain.
The 42-year-old was found in his car in the early hours of the morning in Torrevieja, on the Costa Blanca in south-east Spain.
He was taken by ambulance to the Hospital Vega Baja, in nearby Orihuela, where he was being treated.
He is understood to be a in a serious condition after being shot in the abdomen.
The man is from Eastern Europe but no more details of his identity have been disclosed, possibly for his own safety.
Police have not said it was a gangland shooting, but it has all the hallmarks of this type of violence.
A report by the General Commission of Police last week said there were now 500 mafia gangs in Spain, mostly from Eastern Europe, China and South America.
There is also a rising number of Asian-born Britons.
