MADRID — The Spanish Guardia Civil have arrested a man who drove the wrong way along a motorway for 9km in search of petrol.
The 38-year-old was arrested on the A-44 road between Bailen and Motril, near Jaen in southern Spain.
Police revealed the man's pregnant wife and their young daughter were also travelling in the car.
He was arrested in the early hours of the morning when drivers rang police to report the car travelling the wrong way along the motorway.
The driver was arrested after smashing into another car. No-one was seriously hurt in the crash. The driver underwent a breathalyser test which proved negative.
He told police that he had decided to go for a spin to see if his car had enough petrol.
The man was detained in custody.
