MADRID - With forest fires continuing to threaten various parts of the Spanish countryside, the Guardia Civil has arrested a man believed to be responsible for starting no less than 42 fires in the north-western region of Galicia.

The man, identified only by his initials, A.A.R.S, is aged 40 and comes from the village of Salvaterra de Miño, a government spokesman said on Monday.

He was arrested after agents from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA), carried out an exhaustive study of the operating methods used in starting the fires, which have burnt large areas of the hills near his village.

The fires had been set off over a period of several months, although they had become much more frequent since the last two weeks in July, added the spokesman.
