MADRID – Police arrested 45,296 men last year for alleged attacks of domestic violence  – or one every 12 minutes.

It is the first time that the scale of the problem has been revealed in arrest figures, which were issued by the Interior Ministry.

And one in ten arrests in Spain for alleged criminal offences is related to domestic violence.

Women’s groups have said it shows society is becoming more aware of the problem.

But some judges have complained men are arrested without sufficient proof because authorities are worried about the consequences of failing to act if the alleged attacker continues to offend more seriously.
