BARCELONA-The alleged head of an Italian Mafia clan said to have run a major drugs ring selling ecstasy and cocaine in nightclubs has been arrested at Barcelona airport in Spain, police said.

They said Luca Avallone was wanted by Italian police for running the ring which was recently smashed with the arrest of 24 suspects and seizure of 200,000 ecstasy pills and a major cocaine haul.

Avallone, believed to have run the network with his brother Pier Paolo, was taken into custody as he was about to board a low-cost flight from Barcelona to Bologna in Italy.

Earlier, Spanish police arrested 15 people and seized 35,000 Ecstasy pills.

The Spanish interior ministry said the gang was made up of seven Spaniards, four Moroccans- including a minor - a Venezuelan, a Palestinian, one Spaniard of Moroccan origin and another man of Syrian origin born in Spain, a statement said.

The operation took place in two stages. In December, police seized an initial haul of 17,000 tablets and arrested four people in Fuenlabrada, near Madrid.

Then on 29 January a further 18,000 pills were seized and eleven more people detained, all in the same region.
