Italian Renaissance painter Domenico Ghirlandaio is the focus of a new exhibition opening Wednesday at Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

The retrospective "Ghirlandaio and Renaissance Florence" includes about 60 works by the artist and other masters of Quattrocento Florentine art such as Botticelli and Piero del Pollaiuolo.

The centrepiece of the show is Ghirlandaio's "Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni," which is part the museum's permanent collection.

It also includes a section on religious art that brings together panel paintings, sculptures and manuscripts.

The exhibition is open from June 23 until October 10.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza is considered one of Spain's three great museums along with the Prado and the Reina Sofia which are also in Madrid.
