MADRID — Madrid, one of the cities that lost out to London in the competition to stage the 2012 Summer Olympics, is to try for the 2016 games.
Feliciano Mayoral, head of the Madrid 2012 organizing committee, said the Spanish capital had a solid proposal that made a good impression on the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
He said efforts would focus on "strong international lobbying to sell Madrid 2016".
Snr Mayoral dismissed claims the Spanish capital could not win the 2016 Games because of the IOC's practice of awarding the Games to sites in alternate continents.
"That's not written anywhere, the IOC's own president has said that they would not take that into account," Mayoral said.
Mayoral said he felt sad at last week's announcement that the British capital had been awarded the 2012 games.
"We're all very sad, we had a lot of hopes but are proud of ourselves and the job we did," he said.
