MADRID — Madrid is to start preliminary talks with the Basque terrorist organisation ETA in a few weeks, it was reported on Thursday.
In an interview published by the German weekly 'Die Zeit', José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero revealed the first tentative talks.
He said: "Anyone who believes that violence is a solution will also need a lot of time to put right such a mistake."
In the interview, published on Thursday, the prime minister said there was no quick end to 38 years of violence.
He said he had "told the Spanish public that the road is long. A long and difficult road, but one which is worth following for peace".
ETA declared its first ever 'permanent ceasefire' in March after months of expectations about an end to its armed campaign which has claimed 817 lives.
