MADRID — Spain is to buy or expropriate land which has ecological value along the Costas to protect it from property speculators, it was announced Thursday.

From September, the ministry of environment will buy up land to act as a buffer against the encroaching concrete jungle along the coasts.

Javier Gregori, a ministry official, told the Spanish radio station Cadena SER that the government had already earmarked 50 properties for purchase.

They all share a "high natural value".

Cristina Narbona, environment minister, said she did not want to reveal the properties because it may have an effect on their cost.

The government has a budget of EUR 20 million, but this figure could triple in the next few years.
