The Spanish capital hopes to beat the favourite Chicago, the hometown of US President Barack Obama.

MADRID – Madrid Wednesday presented the International Olympic Committee with its bid to host the 2016 Games, hoping to beat the favourite Chicago, the hometown of US President Barack Obama.

The Madrid 2016 organisers said they handed over the 600-page dossier to the IOC at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the eve of the deadline for nominations.

The Spanish capital is competing with Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo for the right to stage the 2016 Olympics. The IOC is to make a decision on October 2 in Copenhagen.

The Spanish capital failed in its bid to host the 2012 Games, which went to London. The northeastern Spanish city of Barcelona hosted the 1992 Games.

But the election of Obama has made Chicago the favourite to bring the 2016 Games to the US president's hometown.

An IOC mission is expected in Madrid in May to evaluate the bid.
