MADRID – The mayor of Madrid was rushed to hospital Thursday after fainting at home when he suffered stomach problems, authorities said.
Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón was taken to the Gregorio Marañón hospital in the early hours of the morning.
He was found unconscious by his wife, Mar Utrera, in the bathroom of their home.
He had fallen on the floor and cut his forehead.
The mayor was taken to hospital where he complained of stomach pains.
Doctors said he had been suffering from gastroenteritis and his medication had produced hypertension and caused him to collapse, Madrid council sources said.
Gallardón will stay in hospital for up to 24 hours under observation.
The mayor of Madrid has a powerful and political job, like the similar positions in London or New York.
