Madrid regional assembly lawmakers started chanting they want water following an announcement that water bottles are banned from the chamber because a spill could block the electronic voting system.

MADRID – Madrid regional assembly lawmakers revolted Thursday after the president of the chamber announced they would be banned from having water bottles at their seats because a spill could block the electronic voting system.

"We want water!" some of the deputies began chanting after Elvira Rodriguez said that from now on they would have to quench their thirst by using a water fountain located outside of the chamber.

The conservative president of the Madrid region, former education minister Esperanza Aguirre, immediately challenged the new rule by bringing in a bottle of water, but Rodriguez the ban would remain in place.

"I am sorry but... I think the best solution is to drink water outside, just as in the national parliament. We are not going to repeat any more votes in here because of this," she said.
