MADRID — A Madrid taxi driver who has never been to London has now brought one of the English capital's most famous symbols to Spain — a London cab.

Jose Maria Arribas, who paid EUR 37,000 for the white Austin taxi cab, had dreamt of buying the cab for years.

Other tax drivers in Barcelona, Valencia and Benidorm already have the famous black cabs.

But this has not put off Arribas, who said: "I am the only one who has a cab of this kind in Madrid."

All his passengers have been delighted with the comfort which the car affords, he said.

The London cab has air conditioning, heating, back seat lights and a microphone between the driver and the passengers.

But one thing makes the cab even more popular — the fare is exactly the same as one of the often cramped, decrepit Madrid cabs.
