ZARAGOZA - Ryanair, the Irish low-cost carrier, is to launch a new route from London Stansted to Zaragoza in December as part of the airline's expansion into Spain, it was reported Friday.
The route is expected to be served daily, with a possible second service to be added if demand warrants.
Ryanair is already promoting the route to Zaragoza, about 250 kilometres (160 miles) northeast of Madrid, offering 10,000 free tickets over the internet in December and January, although excluding the Christmas holiday season from 16 December to 5 January.
The company already flies to seven other destinations in Spain as it vies
with British low-cost carrier Easyjet.
"We promised a month ago we would bring low-cost flights to Zaragoza and here they are," said Michael O'Leary, head of Ryanair said after meeting the president of the Aragon region local government Marcelino Iglesias and town mayor Juan Alberto Belloch.
O'Leary discounted moves to set up services outside Europe, saying there remained room to expand other routes.
On Wednesday, Spain's Air Europa announced it would launch a service from Madrid to the Mexican Caribbean resort of Cancun on 1 November.
