MADRID - DPA - The leader of an illegal youth organization linked to the armed Basque separatist group ETA was detained Tuesday in the French Basque region, Spanish media reported.

Asier Tapia Zulaika was captured while driving between Biriatou and Hendaya. He was not armed, nor did he carry identity documents at the time of his arrest.

Tapia had fled to France in 2005 in order not to face a trial at which prosecutors wanted him to be sentenced to 111 years in prison for belonging to a terrorist organization and acts of street violence.

Charges had also been raised against 25 other members of the youth organization known under the names of Segi, Haika and Jarrai. dpa st sc
