MADRID — A lawyer who was on the run after being convicted of distributing a compromising video featuring a national newspaper editor has been caught on the border with Portugal.

José Emilio Rodríguez Menéndez was arrested in the Spanish town of Fuentes de Oñoro after almost a year on the run.

Rodríguez was convicted of distributing the video, which purportedly showed lewd images of Pedro J. Ramirez, the editor of the Spanish daily El Mundo.

Earlier, when police tried to check his papers at Lisbon airport, Rodríguez Menéndez fled leaving behind EUR 45,000 in cash hidden in a suitcase and his Bolivian girlfriend.

In June last year, he was sentenced to two years in jail but absconded before the sentence started. He was also convicted of tax fraud.

A month later, he was arrested in Buenos Aires by Interpol but fled when he was released on conditional bail while Spain started extradition proceedings.

Warrants for his arrest were issued by two other courts, one in Malaga and the other in Madrid.

The case in Malaga related to a conviction for a EUR 1.8 million tax fraud.
