BARCELONA — A man died instantly on a level crossing when he was hit by a train which may have been going too fast as it was late.
The 35-year-old has not been identified but died immediately due to the impact of the train, which had no chance of stopping in time.
The tragedy happened at about 12pm at Cercanias, near Barcelona. No-one else was injured in the accident.
One passenger, travelling on the train between Villanueva and Geltrú, said the train was late and was trying to make up this time by going too fast.
Other witnesses said the man may have walked across the level crossing instead of taking the underpass because it was strewn with uncollected rubbish. A planned walkway over the level crossing had never been built.
Twenty people have been killed in accidents linked to trains in this part of Catalonia, in north-east Spain.
