SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA-Galician governor Manuel Fraga, the last remaining minister who served under the dictator Francisco Franco, has set 19 June as the date for regional legislative elections.

In a bid to hold on to his rightwing Populist Party's majority and extend his 16 years in power, Fraga will fight the election despite ailing health.

Fraga, 82, brought forward the election of a regional parliament for the north west Spanish region of Galicia which was originally expected to be held in October.

"Don Manuel," as the Galician governor is also called in the very conservative and rural region, bowed to pressure from his supporters to hold the ballot earlier to preserve the PP's chances for victory.

The party has been threatened with internal divisions and a strong challenge from the
Socialists and Galician nationalists.
