La Tomatina in Bunyol

23rd July 2009, Comments 0 comments

This annual event is one of the messiest, most unique festivals, where thousands of revellers engage in a giant tomato fight on 26 August.

The tiny village of Bunyol, close to Valencia, comes alive when thousands of tourists and locals pack the alley-like streets and wait for the trucks filled with tomatoes to roll in.  Then at 11 am the frenzied war of tomato throwing begins. People will become drenched from head to toe with tomato juice. After a while everyone all looks the same, undistinguishable, blood-drenched red.

Rumour has it that this tradition began during a food fight that got out of hand in the 40’s. Now it has become a cathartic way to end the summer and prepare for the school year.
