The 40-year-old driver died later from his injuries.
Police arrested a 20-year-old and had to call in reinforcements because they feared the station where he was being held might be overrun by angry colleagues of the dead taxi-driver.
The attack happened in Bilbao the early hours of the morning when the attacker slit the driver's jugular vein.
The married father-of-two managed to call colleagues who alerted police for help.
The young suspect was covered in blood when he was arrested. He admitted to having a struggle with the driver.
Even after his arrest, taxi-drivers threatened to break-in to the police station and there was a clash between drivers and police which left some officers with slight injuries.
