MADRID - A man has been jailed for 64 years for the brutal rape and murder of a young woman whose body was burned and dumped on a road in a case which shocked Spain.
Sandra Palo, 22, was repeatedly raped then murdered in May 2003.
A truck driver found her charred body on the N401 road to Toledo.
Francisco Javier Astroga, 20, was convicted of kidnapping, three counts of rape and murder and must pay compensation of EUR 408,809.
On 17 May 2003, Palo was waiting at a bus stop on her way home to Getafe a town near Madrid after a night out with friends in the capital.
Astroga and four others drew up in a car and persuaded her to get in.
They raped her repeatedly in the car then murdered her and tried to burn her corpse to get rid of the evidence.
Three men, all aged under 18, have already been convicted in connection with the murder and were sentenced to eight years each.
But a court ruled in October 2003 ruled that they were forced to take part in the killing.
The family of Sandra Palo have one million signatures to get the three minors to serve longer prison sentences after reaching 18.
