CASTELLON — A lawyer who was kidnapped and stuffed in a car boot called for help with his mobile after his captors forgot to check if he was carrying a phone.
Carlos Reverter Ramos, 43, called police and colleagues at his office and told them he had been kidnapped by 'African-looking' men.
Eventually, police found Reverter by tracing where the calls had been made from.
Badly injured, he was discovered still in the car boot on a road between Castellon and Villareal, in eastern Spain.
However, he had suffered multiple fractures during a severe beating by his kidnappers and died on his way to the hospital.
Police do not know why Reverter had been kidnapped, but suspect he may have been seized to "settle accounts" between two crime gangs.
Reverter, who was based at an office in Castellon, was kidnapped on Tuesday as he left his office.
Spain has seen a rising number of shootings or beatings of lawyers by criminal gangs in the past year.
These lawyers, who may be acting for one gang, are seen as easy targets for other criminals who want to cause maximum damage to another gang.
