MADRID — The father of singer Julio Iglesias has died in hospital. He was 90.
Julio Iglesias Puga, a respected gynaecologist, died on Monday morning in the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid.
He had led a colourful life, making frequent appearances in Spain's prensa rosa, the country's equivalent of the tabloid press.
In 1981, he was kidnapped by ETA and later released by police after 19 days in captivity.
In recent weeks, he confirmed in an interview with the magazine Hola his American wife, Ronna Keith, was expecting their second child.
The couple met in the early 1990s and they had their first child when Dr Iglesias was 89 years old. His wife was 43 years his junior.
In the 1940s, he married Charo de la Cueva and they had two sons, Julio and Carlos.
In an authorized biography, published in 2004, he recounted his experiences during the Spanish Civil War when he nearly died in a Republican jail because he refused to renounce his support for the Falange party, which allied itself to the late dictator, General Francisco Franco.
