LAS PALMAS — An investigation is underway into the relationship between a judge and the family of a convicted drug dealer.
Judge Jose Antonio Matin, chief justice of the Las Palmas provincial court, is suspected of peddling favours after he was spotted having dinner with the brother of a convicted drug trafficker.
It is also thought Matin also met the drug dealer Rafael Bornia on several occasions.
Matin bailed and then released Bornia despite the fact the defendant was implicated in a high-profile police investigation into a drug running and money laundering network in 2003 and 2004.
The High Court in the Canary Islands has launched an investigation.
Another judge uncovered the evidence which lead to the inquiry.
