PALMA — A man strangled his wife because he claimed she was using Internet chat rooms to contact men.
The 45-year-old Spaniard gave himself up to police in Palma in Majorca, telling officers he became jealous of his wife María Josefa Rodríguez.
He said he strangled the 41-year-old with his belt and left her body on the floor of bedroom of their home.
The alleged killer said he had tightened the belt too much around his wife's neck but when she became unconscious, he waited 20 minutes before calling the police.
Police said María Josefa Rodríguez had not complained formally about domestic violence though it was known her husband, who was not named, had abused her verbally and physically.
The couple had three teenage children who were being cared for by relatives.
The latest murder brings the number of women killed as a result of domestic violence during August to eleven.
