Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti will hold telephone talks with EU economic affairs commissioner Olli Rehn on Tuesday evening, a spokeswoman for Rehn said.

"They will talk by telephone at 7:00 pm (1700 GMT)," Chantal Hughes told AFP, without divulging the exact scope of their discussion, as Italy's sovereign debt risk premium soared to a euro-era record high.

The dialogue comes after Italy's finance minister met with the central bank and stock market authorities to grapple with the growing emergency, and ahead of a meeting on Wednesday morning with eurozone chief Jean-Claude Juncker in Luxembourg.

Tremonti, who has been battling links to a corruption probe in Italy after admitting making cash payments for rent to one of the probe's targets, is also due to address the Italian parliament later on Wednesday.
