BARCELONA- A Mafia boss, allegedly involved in a recent bloody clan war in Naples, was arrested in Barcelona.
Raffaele Amato was arrested on Saturday night by Spanish police along with five alleged accomplices from the Naples region in southern Italy.
He was to appear before a Spanish court on Monday for judges to consider his possible extradition to Italy, police in Barcelona said.
Italian police sources said Amato's arrest meant "the two factions who have bloodied Naples were now decapitated".
Amato, wanted for murder and drug trafficking, was located by Italian police from the organised crime unit, police said.
He had escaped arrest during a police swoop in Naples last December when 60 people were detained.
He is believed to be the leader of a breakaway group involved in a Mafia clan war with the Di Lauro family over the control of the illegal drug trade in Naples, which has already claimed 134 lives during the past year.
Several of the victims have been innocent bystanders.
Italy sent hundreds of extra police into the city in November and though the number of arrests increased, the killings have continued unabated.
At the end of January Italian police arrested Cosimo di Lauro in Barcelona, son of the clan chief, Paolo di Lauro, who remains on the run.
