MADRID – Prices in Spain seem to be rising at record levels, according to figures unveiled on Thursday.
The National Statistics Institute (INE) said the Index of Harmonised Consumer Prices – a guide to inflation - was 4.2 percent in January, fifth-tenths more than December.
If that level of inflation is confirmed by the official figures to be published on 16 February, it would be the highest increase since 1997.
The level reflects substantial price increases in basic consumer goods like transport, electricity and gas.
