MADRID - Spain's consumer price index fell 0.70 percent in January, bringing the year-on-year inflation rate down to 2.4 percent.

The National Statistics Institute said on Tuesday the core inflation rate, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, came in at 2.7 percent, or two-tenths of a percent above the December level.

The rise in the core rate was due to higher prices for services, officials said.

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, up 5 percent, was the sector posting the sharpest price increase, while clothing and footwear, which registered a decline of 11.7 percent, was the sector that experienced the biggest price decrease.
