SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE – Triple the amount of illegal immigrants have arrived by boat on the Canary Isles this year compared to last year.
On Wednesday, the Canary Isles’ government said it had counted a total of 14,589 immigrants between the start of this year and Sunday.
The figure was 307 percent more than the 4,751 recorded last year.
Immigrants travelling by boat from Africa have also changed the islands which they are targeting. While before they tended to arrive mainly at Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, now they are arriving above all at Tenerife, with Gran Canaria in second place.
There are also islands such as El Hierro, which are receiving the odd boat, and until this year had not received any immigrants by sea.
The number of immigrants heading to Lanzarote has dropped while the island La Gomera has seen numerous boats.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a canoe with 172 immigrants arrived at El Hierro, the largest number to arrive in a single boat on the Canary Isles ever.
