Iberia to launch trans-Atlantic Barcelona route
As part of the airline’s new three-year strategy, 10 new trans-Atlantic flights will operate from Barcelona.22 April 2008
BARCELONA - Barcelona will be one of the cornerstones of Iberia's new three-year strategy, which includes plans for up to 10 new trans-Atlantic flights operating from the Catalan capital, the airline's chairman, Fernando Conte, said yesterday.
Conte spoke from Barcelona's El Prat airport as he laid the first stone of its new maintenance hanger.
Iberia will sponsor 75 percent of the EUR 24-million hanger, which is expected to create hundreds of jobs. Conte was quick to point out that while perhaps overdue, "no one has invested [in Barcelona] like Iberia."
The news comes amid criticism of Spain's main air carrier, which has cut down on routes due to competition from low-cost air carriers such as Clickair.
