Iberia says cancelled nearly 1,000 flights due to ash chaos
Spanish flag carrier Iberia cancelled 963 flights between Thursday and Tuesday night due to the closure of European airspace by a cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The cancellations included flights by Iberia's subsidiary, Air Nostrum, she added.
The company, which unlike other airlines has not yet provided an estimate for the economic cost of the flight disruption, said it will restart its flights to Britain and Germany on Wednesday.
While much of European airspace was closed Thursday following the eruption a day earlier of the Eyjafjoell volcano in Iceland, Spanish airports have for the most part remained open.
But airlines have had to cancel hundreds of flights from Spain to other European destinations which have been affected by the ash.
