ELCHE - Police have detained a man whose wife and two children were found murdered in Elche, in south-east Spain.
Police sources said the father had been the leading suspect in the case.
Reports suggested he was subdued by his own brother, who saw him wielding a hammer in a pharmacy shortly after the bodies of the woman and her two young children were discovered.
The bodies of the children, aged seven and two, and their mother, were found in their house in Calle Pablo Picasso, in Elche.
Police have so far not released the identities of the victims or the sex of the children.
The hammer is thought to have been the murder weapon.
Elche is a small town, popular with expats, which is the centre of the Spanish shoe-making industry.
