MADRID - A hunter in the Catalan Pyrenees was wounded by a bear yesterday, in the first attack on a human by such an animal since their reintroduction to the region in 1996.

The wounded man, Luis T, needed stitches in his leg and arm, and was discharged from the hospital shortly after.

The retiree was hunting boar in the 1,200-metre Portet Mountain alone with his dog when a large bear passed by him just two meters away. He tried to scare off the bear by shouting at it, but the animal attacked instead. He was eventually able to make the animal flee by firing his rifle twice.
