MADRID – The head of the Guardia Civil, Santiago López Valdivielso, said Tuesday he could not discount the possibility of arresting more Al Qaeda suspects.
Valdivielso made these comments after the arrest of two suspected Al Qaeda suspects who are thought to have provided the support team for the 11 September atrocities.
The arrests of Khaled Madani and Moussa Laoual late Monday were made with the help of United States, German and French security services, said Valdivielso.
He disclosed the two suspects had large quanities of cash and materials to falsify documents.
They were also found with propaganda videos linking them to the terrorist group.
The two Algerian citizens were arrested in Murcia and Torrevieja, eastern Spain, on suspicion of belonging to Al Qaeda.
Authorities arrested Madani, 33, and Laoual, 36, in a "complex" operation led by Judge Guillermo Ruiz Polanco.
Their cases will be handled by the high court known as the Audiencia Nacional, which is dealing with several other jailed alleged members of the network.
Madani and Laoual are accused of carrying out logistical activities for Al Qaeda, including falsifying passports and visas, which "could have been key in the preparations for September 11," said the Interior Ministry.
The pair are thought to have been linked to the Al Qaeda cell that operated out of Hamburg, Germany, which was led by Mohamed Atta, one of the suicide pilots in the attacks.
