MADRID-The Spanish interior ministry said police arrested 823 suspected members of organised crime groups along the southern Costa de Sol so far this year.

It said police and Civil Guards conducted dozens of swoops on crooks involved in prostitution, drug trafficking and money laundering.

Earlier this month, a prosecutor said police had uncovered only the tip of the iceberg as they investigated the alleged laundering of hundreds of millions of euros by a law firm based in Marbella.

In a statement, the ministry said much of the organized crime in the region was connected with the trade in hashish from neighbouring Morocco.
