An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale woke residents in the Spanish province of Huelva in the early hours of Friday morning.

MADRID - An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale woke residents along the southern Portuguese coast and in the Spanish province of Huelva in the early hours of Friday morning, although no serious damage was reported by authorities on either side of the border.

The earthquake occurred at 1.12am with its epicentre located 100 kilometres southwest of Cape St. Vincent on the Portuguese coast. Portuguese emergency services said they received calls from residents along the Algarve coast and as far north as Lisbon, while in Spain the tremor was felt only in the province of Huelva. It was followed by two smaller aftershocks, measuring 2.6 and 3.0 on the Richter scale.
