MADRID - A hiker was killed and two others injured when they were struck by lightning while walking near the Pyrenees village of Fanlo on Tuesday.
A helicopter had to be called in as one of them suffered serious head injuries on falling when the ray struck said the Guardia Civil. Both were taken to a nearby district hospital at Barbastro.
The three, all said to be French citizens, were walking between the Mirador de Diasas viewpoint and the Góriz mountain refuge near the Ordesa National Park when they were caught in a sudden hailstorm.
After the alarm was raised by a park guard, the Guardia called in a helicopter with an onboard medical team from nearby Greim.
They were too late to save one of the hikers, but were able to evacuate the two others said the Guardia.
The province of Huesca, where the lightning struck, has been on alert since Monday because of the threat from strong winds and heavy rain
