High-speed drugs gang arrested

BARCELONA – Thirty-five members of a drug-smuggling gang were arrested Monday in Catalonia in north-east Spain.
The gang were thought to have smuggled 12,000 kilogrammes of cannabis into Spain in the past five months.
The police operation was led by the Catalan police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, with help from the National Police force and the Spanish Customs Service.
The operation started on 30 August when police found 2,100 kilogrammes of cannabis on the beach of the resort Sant Pere Pescador, near Girona.
The gang, who were based in Manlleu in the Barcelona region, used fast inflatable boats to bring the drugs onto the mainland.
The speedboats, who could travel at up to 45 knots, were able to outs peed the police and Customs.
